Last but not least, Michael Anthony’s Cucina Italiana offers an award-winning wine list to go along with its incredible menu.

2) Get a couple’s massage

Nothing says relaxation like a massage. And if you’re looking to enjoy one with your partner, Hilton Head is the right place to do it. There’s no shortage of great spas on the island, but we recommend Hilton Head Heavenly Spa by Westin. This luxury gem offers couples a signature message followed by a salt or sugar scrub, along with a relaxing beverage and some soak time. Other local favorites include Le Spa at Sea Pines and Ahh Green Spa, both of which provide oasis-like environments and blissful side-by-side massages. If you’re used to frigid and gloomy winters, Hilton Head just might be the perfect escape for you. During the coldest months of the year, the island’s average temperature is a comfortable 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Not only that, but we get more days of sunshine per year than the national average. Depending on your personal preferences, you might actually find that it’s nicer to hit the links or take a walk on the beach when it’s cooler out. Looking for fun things to do on Hilton Head in the fall? We’ve compiled our favorite fall activities in this post to help you enjoy the season to its fullest.

Summer is over. There are fewer tourists around, and the weather is slowly cooling off. While many people consider this to be Hilton Head’s off-season, it’s actually a magical time of year here on the island. Between the more relaxed pace of life and the mix of fun local events, it’s a great time to explore the Lowcountry.

Are you lucky enough to be here over the post-summer months? If so, here are five fun things to do in Hilton Head in the fall.

1) Hilton Head Pumpkin Patch

If you’re looking to get your family into the autumn spirit, check out Pumpkin Patch. This annual event, put on by the Island Rec Centre, is the perfect place for you and the kids to celebrate the fall harvest—and get a jump on Halloween. The celebration features pumpkin decorating, carnival games, a costume contest, and even a petting zoo.

This year’s festivities will take place on October 27th at Shelter Cove Community Park. Admission is free; all you have to do is show up between 4 and 8 p.m. to join in the fun!

2) Hilton Head Oyster Festival

The Lowcountry is known for its seafood, and our annual Oyster Festival is one of the best places to sample it. November 9th and 10th, you can enjoy the freshness of local oysters along with an abundance of fantastic entertainment and fun activities.

On Friday evening, attendees will gather at Shelter Cove Pavilion for steamed oysters—along with heartier fare, such as pulled pork, chili, and clam chowder. On Saturday, a steady lineup of live music will accompany the oyster feast. You’ll also find a sports lounge, kids’ zone, and a variety of pop-up shops. This is one event you won’t want to miss, so put the Oyster Festival high on your list of things to do in Hilton Head in the fall.

3) The Turkey Trot

Nothing says fall like Thanksgiving, and Hilton Head is a great place to kick off the festivities. Every year, island residents and visitors attend the local Turkey Trot event, which features a “Fun Walk” (5k and 10k races). Come out and get some exercise before your evening turkey coma—and support a good cause in the process (proceeds go to the Island Recreation Association’s scholarship fund).

The races start at the Dockside Restaurant parking lot at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving day (November 22nd). Attendees are also invited to join the afterparty, which will feature free beer and snacks.

4) Try top Hilton Head restaurants

If you’re looking for things to do in Hilton Head in the fall, don’t forget to check out the local restaurant scene. While it’s far from cold here in the Lowcountry, slightly cooler temperatures make this a great time to enjoy some warm and savory fare.

Brunch lovers will appreciate the comforting breakfast staples at Palmetto Bay Sunrise Cafe. For BBQ, check out the Smokehouse or One Hot Mama’s American Grille. The Skull Creek Boathouse offers some incredible seafood options (including sushi and fish sandwiches), as does a recently-revamped Bonboras. Other standout options include Truffles Cafe (try the crab cakes or blackened fish), Vine (a Greenwich Village-inspired restaurant near Coligny Beach), and Santa Fe Cafe (for Southwestern fare).

5) Enjoy the outdoors

Most of the summer activities that residents and visitors enjoy on Hilton Head are just as much fun in the fall. In fact, the temperate weather may actually increase the appeal of spending the day outdoors.

1) Coligny Beach

Coligny Beach is probably the most popular beach on Hilton Head. Boasting a wide boardwalk and gentle ocean waves, it’s the perfect spot to take the family on a sunny day. Fans of this central hotspot also enjoy its convenient amenities, which include a kids’ splash pad, a stunning gazebo, and more.

Coligny Beach owes at least some of its popularity to nearby Coligny Plaza, a well-patronized shopping center. If you want to transition your beach day into a pleasant night on the town, consider a seafood dinner at Bombora’s, Fish, Vine, or a film at the Coligny Theatre.

Also worth noting: the Town of Hilton Head Island will soon begin some major improvements to the Coligny area, including roadway upgrades, additional parking, a new park and playground, and a children’s museum (among other changes). These additions are poised to make visiting the area even more fun and convenient. We can’t wait to check them out!

2) Burkes Beach

Burkes Beach isn’t as popular as Coligny Beach, which means it tends to be less crowded and a lot more peaceful. While you won’t find as many amenities nearby as you would at Coligny, you will find expansive Atlantic Ocean views, incredibly clean sand, and plenty of space where you can spread out your towel.

Another major bonus for dog owners: Burkes is canine-friendly. On our visits, we’ve seen plenty of four-legged beach-goers romping around. It’s also a great place for cyclists, given that the sandy paths leading to the beach can make for a slightly challenging walk.

3) The beaches in Sea Pines

Without a doubt, Sea Pines offers some of the best beaches on Hilton Head. This resort and residential community boasts five miles of beachfront, though access to it is private. Luckily, with a modestly-priced day pass in hand, you’re free to enter the community and explore.

The Sea Pines Beach Club is a major highlight. This lively spot along the Atlantic features a restaurant, bar, and food market. South Beach Marina Village is another hub of activity. Located just two minutes from the beach, the area offers a number of shopping and dining options—including the well-known Salty Dog Cafe.

4) The beaches in Palmetto Dunes

If you’re on a mission to visit the best beaches in Hilton Head, South Carolina, don’t forget about Palmetto Dunes. Like Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes is a resort and residential community. The region offers three miles of pristine white sand beachfront that’s perfectly-suited for lounging around or taking a stroll. The Strawless Summer on Hilton Head Island

For many years Hilton Head Island has walked a fine line between developing the island and preserving the natural beauty and ecosystem that it depends upon. In a strong effort to balance those scales the “Strawless Summer” campaign has taken over the Island sparking conversations on conservation and the responsibilities of the locals, tourists, and businesses alike. Let’s dive into the impact, the alternatives, and what businesses are participating in the campaign to end plastic waste in our oceans.

By 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.

The Impact

Hilton Head Island loves its Sea Turtles, Dolphins, and Horseshoe Crabs! They are staple wildlife figures of the Lowcountry and create economic and environmental impacts that are impossible to quantify. As a coastal town we cannot ignore the fact that our behaviors impact the local environment. As of January 2018 the Hilton Head Town Council passed a new town ordinance to ban plastic bags on the Island. The end of straw use in a natural progression and one that is picking up momentum.

The straw itself does not hold the largest percentage of plastic trash in the ocean but it is often the most detrimental. The shape, weight, and size of the straw creates issues with both wildlife consumption and injury. It is not uncommon for conservation to find straws in animals noses and other orifices as well as sitting undigested in their stomachs. For an eye-opening video of the impact of straws on our wildlife you can watch a viral video from 2015 of a straw being removed from the nose of a sea turtle. The video is both heart breaking and graphic but it is the single most relevant example of the true impact of straws in our oceans.

Dump Plastic – Use Alternatives

While you can still request a straw at many locations on Hilton Head Island this summer there are alternatives that you can bring with you and use at home.

Naturally Degradable Straws are straws that are easily broken down in the environment in the event that they do end up somewhere outside of a garbage disposal facility. Examples of these straws include bamboo straws, natural grain straws, seaweed-based straws, and renewable and natural resource based straws. There are plenty of options out there all of which can easily be ordered online.

Glass Straws are not only eco-friendly, they are also cost-effective. While the naturally degradable straws will be used once and tossed aside, the glass straws are reusable and sustainable. Many companies boast a lifetime guarantee of their glass straws in an effort to create a long-lasting impact on the environment.

Metal Straws come in several varieties including titanium and stainless steel. In addition to putting some style in your cup, the metal straw also keeps your drinks cold and does not run the risk of degrading or breaking.

Horseshoe Crabs: The Medical Marvel of the Lowcountry

Hilton Head Island is known for many things including its beautiful beaches, active lifestyle, and amazing food. One thing that does not come to mind for most when dreaming of the island is the horseshoe crab. These armored living fossils can be found in the marsh and on the beach throughout the Lowcountry holding an essential role in our local ecosystem and the medical industry.

Fact #1 – Horseshoe Crab eggs and larvae are a top food source

With horseshoe crabs laying nearly 100,000 eggs a season it is no wonder so many animals rely on this major food source for survival. Top predators for the eggs and larvae are migratory shorebirds like the Red Knot and sea turtles. As horseshoe crabs become adults they continue to be preyed upon by sea turtles, sharks, and larger shorebirds. Don’t feel too bad for the horseshoe crab though, they eat clams, worms, and a variety of crustaceans as well as other smaller animals.

Fact #2 – The shell does not grow with them!

You may see a dead horseshoe crab on the beach but chances are its actually a molt of the exoskeleton. Like all insects and crustaceans, horseshoe crabs do not grow with their shell. Once they have outgrown their current shell they push through and grow a new one. This is called molting. Juvenile horseshoe crabs can molt upwards of twenty times before becoming an adult and never need to molt again.

Fact #3 – Horseshoe Crab blood is blue and is a Medical Marvel

Human blood contains hemoglobin to transport oxygen, horseshoe crabs use hemocyanin. The abundance of copper found in the hemocyanin causes the blood of horseshoe crabs to be a milky blue. This blood is incredibly sensitive to bacteria like e.coli and is used in the testing of vaccines. Horseshoe crabs are being farmed for their blood as a result of their medical and scientific properties, going for top dollar in testing facilities. Fact #4 – Horseshoe Crabs aren’t crabs at all!

These amazing creatures are not part of the crab family at all, they are Merostomata which means “legs attached to the mouth.” More appropriate cousins of the horseshoe crab would be spiders and scorpions. Like spiders they have a pair of pincers near the mouth that is used to grab, hold, and push food toward their mouth. As night feeders they use these with their 6 other pairs of legs and 10 eyes to catch their prey and get a hearty meal in before sunrise.

Fact #5 – They are harmless

Did the spider thing scare you away! Come back! The horseshoe crab is harmless even with that spiked tail on its end. The tail serves the specific purpose of steering and correcting the body in the water and on land. If they get flipped over they can often dig their tail into the sand and turn over. The spines along the sides of their body are sharp so caution is necessary if handling, but they are not out to harm you.

The Horseshoe Crab is vital to our ecosystem and a native to our area. Please respect these neat creatures next time you see one on the beach or in the marsh. If you come across one flipped over on its back take a second a turn them over to they can continue on with their journey – their survival and our ecosystem depends on you!
